Smile the opposite of overpass

The overpass was designed to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.

Which is the opposite of "overpass," underpass or subway? Thanks.

In the US it would be "underpass," as a subway usually refers to an underground train.

...but in Br E 'subway' would be fine for an underpass - in fact (though I haven't checked in a dictionary) I'd say that it usually (if not always) refers to an underpass for pedestrians only.
