The distinction between long and short vowels is about pronunciation.

long A = A in hate
short A = A in hat

long E = E in he
short e = E in left

long I = I in kite
short I = I in kit

long O = O in go
short O = O in hot

long U = U in cute
short U = U in cut

There are several to many American accents.
