Which is correct: " To fire the first salvo" or "To fire the first sally".

"salvo" = a simultaneous discharge of artillery or other guns in a battle

As Anglika says, 'salvo' is right. It would be understandable if you said 'sally' though - same initial syllable, same stress, same number of syllables, same semantic field [a 'sally' is a movement in a situation of conflict; walled towns often have a small gate called a 'sally port'] - so it's an easy mistake to make.

And you could say 'to make the first sally'.
