When we talk about the dead, use what tense: present or past? For example.

I. I'm sorry your friend is dead. And I know you love her very much.
II. I was sorry your friend was dead. And I knew you loved her very much.

This one is correct:I'm sorry your friend is dead. I know you loved her very much.;-)

Can't I say "I was sorry your friend was dead" ?
If not, in what situation people should say "I was sorry"? Pls.

Ps. I heard this sentence from a movie. I am really confused. :shock:

You can say when it completely refers to the past.
