I think you mean "the writing on the wall"

If this is true, it means that in spite of someone's efforts the outcome of their efforts is obvious and usually not what they wanted to happen. It is sort of saying that it is fate controlling their actions.

I guess I just have to accept that this project will fail. The writing is on the wall.
