It's fine to use 'had' before 'inadvertently' - if that is the meaning you want to convey. If there is a past action (usually narrated in the past simple) that happened after you had done something else, that 'something else' goes in the past perfect (and if it happened 'inadvertently' then use that word).

'When Mrs Duncan collected the work, she missed mine - because I had inadvertently left it in the wrong mailbox.'
