Have you tried to do this exercise?
I`ll start it for you :

1.Girls are happier in the country than ___in the city.
A. that B. it C. / D. those, meaning:

Girls are happier in the country than the girls [= those]in the city.

2. the same

3.The school is more beautiful now than____ in the past.

A. that B. it C. / D. one, meaning :

The school is more beautiful now than the school [= that] in the past.

Does that help?

Hi

I`ll try to explain it again. You have to understand the use of the demonstrative pronouns. That is a demonstrative pronoun. Demonstrative pronouns substitute nouns when the nouns they replace can be understood from the context, as in your sentence. You can replace girls with those:

1. Girls in the country are happier than the girls in the city.meaning:
Girls in the country are happier than those in the city.
Those is a demonstrative pronoun which substitute the noun girls. You can use either the noun girls or its substitute those in your sentence.
