2. the same

I`ll try to explain it again. You have to understand the use of the demonstrative pronouns. That is a demonstrative pronoun. Demonstrative pronouns substitute nouns when the nouns they replace can be understood from the context, as in your sentence. You can replace girls with those:
1. Girls in the country are happier than the girls in the city.meaning:
Girls in the country are happier than those in the city.
Those is a demonstrative pronoun which substitute the noun girls. You can use either the noun girls or its substitute those in your sentence.
