My Daughter Is In First Grade And Is Being Taught That W Is Sometimes Considered A Vowel. Is This Correct?

It's impossible to keep track of what's taught in schools, especially at that low level. W is sometimes referred to as a semi-vowel, but if some pedagogical system prefers to call it a vowel - and the teachers in some State are expected to use that method, I don't lose much sleep. If my child was being taught that people with different coloured skin are intrinsically bad, that would worry me. But...
