Is "gravest" an adjective? I don't know this word, but if it exists yes I'm wrong. I tought it was the superlative for "grave".

In the gravest of danger.
Right, but isn't it the superlative of "grave"?
1: I would say "...and to foster..."
2: I would use a colon or semicolon "...1500 men; the rush had begun."
3: ...would alone yeld...
4: ...rode them downhill...
5: ...has brought... (subject: "the use")
6: Does "gold fields" make sense? I would say "gold mines".
7: don't know...
8: its origin
9: yeah, the comma looks weird. I'd go for the semicolon.

We wouldn't use the past progressive here. In fact, I'd use the historic present 'tells'; we often use the present when tlaking about stories. It's correct to say 'Shakepseare says'.

Makes sense. Thank you!
