Dear teachers,
I find wake, awake and awaken quite confusing. The following is from my dictionary:
A. wake (woke, waked; waked, woken): stop sleeping, wake up
a. Did you wake at all during the night?b. Please wake me early tomorrow.c. I woke up with a headache.
B. awaken: to stop sleeping or to make sb. stop sleeping
a. What time shall we awaken him?
b. I was awakened by their quarrel.
c. They were awakened by the sound of gunfire.
d. I awakened at dawn to find him beside me.
C. awake: v. 1. (awaking ; awoke, awaked; awoke, awaked, awoken)to stop sleeping or to make someone stop sleeping:
a. I awoke at seven o'clock.
b.I awoke suddenly from sleep at midnight.
c. She awoke me at seven.
d. The distant rumbling of guns awoke us.
e. One morning I awoke to find myself famous.
2. to become aware of something or to make someone become aware of something:
a. The chance meeting awoke the old passion between them.b. Young people need to awake to the risks involved in casual sex.
But in another dictionary it staes that awake=awaken. Is that right?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.
