sentence's exact meaning
I heard this from a movie:
--A."I saw you on my father's funeral."
--B." Yes, I was sorry."
When people say"I was sorry", it means they don't feel sorry any more now, right? If so, B is not sorry now, is it?
Please.

Re: sentence's exact meaning
B is still sorry. He is just putting his comments in the same time period that A had started talking about.

Re: sentence's exact meaning
So, it's ok to say" I am sorry" too in this situation. Right?

Re: sentence's exact meaning
Yes, either tense would express the same meaning.

Re: sentence's exact meaning
But, I would add, if the funeral was two years ago, not last week, "I was sorry" would make a lot more sense.
