Negative comparatives

Hey folks,

are the words less and the least used only with adjectives that are graded with more and the most or is it correct to say:

#1 It was less cheap than I had expected.


Personally, Id prefer:

#2 It was more expensive than Id expected.


Are both of them correct then?

You would not use less or more with cheap

It can be made into superlatives on its own.

#1 It was cheaper than I had expected.

Cheap, cheaper, cheapest

You cannot do this with expensive though so therefore you use less or more.
