You may be clear on how the word is abused, but how much has the definition changed over time? The meanings seem failry constant to me.![]()
Hello,
I need to write a definition-exemplification essay. The prompt I choose states that I need to choose a word that has changed in meaning over time. I need to trace its changes and write a formal definition. I need to use examples from "real life" and from dictionary. I chose the word "love". I am not sure how to go about doing the introduction. I know that I want to write how men and women abuse the word and state examples. The intro/thesis is what I need help with. I don't even know what to say. :[/b]

My advice is to get a word that has changed more. 'Nice', for instance, once meant 'silly'. 'Anorak' started life in English as an Inuit loan word for a type of coat, a meaning it retains, but has acquired a completely different meaning recently- if a person is an anorak, they are an obsessive about something, a meaning it acquired through the association of the coat and computer geeks.![]()
