What does make for mean here?

... but I'd add that it has a sense of progress as well, so I'd gloss it as 'goes towards producing'.

My modest contribution: to make for = to head for
She made for the exit.
The ship made for the open sea.
Go toward, as in They turned around and made for home.

to make for = to lead to (willingness to compromise makes for success in negotiation

to make for = to provide (to make room for smb.)

Please, keep your's temper if there is a fault of me.
