Smile gaze/stare at me like that

Don't stare at me like that--it makes me uncomfortable.



I doubt if I could replace stare at with gaze/peer at without making a change in meaning. Thanks.

You could use either. They are both weaker in intensity than stare which implies a hard and deliberate action.

  1. I was annoyed when he opened the door and peered into my room.
  2. We sat together and gazed into the stars.
Peer > when you look with scrutiny/curiosity
Gaze > fix your eyes with a steady and intent look
