cross and across
Dear teachers,
Please read the sentence:
In the march across the grasslands, the soldiers experienced hunger and hardships.
My question is: Can I use 'crossing' instead of 'across' in this sentence? If I can is there any difference between the two?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

Re: cross and across
You would have to rephrase the sentence to use "crossing".
"While/When crossing the grasslands on their march, the soldiers..."
