Default take point

Hello everyone.

I'd like to ask a question about the phrase "take point" in the following context.

Once both companies were inside and secure - Vega figured the other GDI companies were engaging the other Nod patrols - Henry turned to Opahle. "Lieutenant, get Takeda."

Opahle looked surprised that Henry had given up that part of the op, then nodded. "Yes, sir."

Vega's respect for Henry went up a level. He did what was best for the battalion, not what was best for him.

"Company 6, let's move!" Henry called out, then looked at Opahle. "Don't crack this up, Lieutenant."

"Wouldn't dream of it, sir." She turned to her soldiers. "Company 7, let's go." Kim, Momoa, McAvoy, take point."

In order to get to the second level, where Takeda was supposedly held, they need to run up the escalator. The three that Opahle sennt first, Vega noticed, were the three largest people in the company. Vega figured they'd draw any fire by being large targets.

Does the phrase "take point" simply mean "go forward"?

'Point' is a group who move ahead of or behind the rest of the party, though ahead in this case.

12: a small detachment ahead of an advance guard or behind a rear guard

Hi KLPNO,

I would try to express my opinion referring the expression "take point".

I have found the answer your question at the Answer.com.

In modern military parlance "take over" or to "walk point" is an idiom referring to assuming the first and most exposed position in a combat military formation, that is , the lead element advancing through hostile or unsecured territory. The soldier, vehicle, or unit on point is frequently the first to take hostile fire.

In some cases "take point" has replaced the idiom " stalking horse".

Something used to cover one's true purpose; a decoy

In Russian language "take point" = поимите огон на себя

"Kim, Momoa, McAvoy, poimite ogon na sebja"
