Hmmm...I don't know if it is an idiom exactly because it means what it says....a turn of phrase perhaps? Anyway, it is correct and quite common (and versatile)

more examples:

I have one job too many
I have three socks too many
She has ten pies too many
He has four girlfriends too many

The original number could be anything (perhaps I have 3 jobs, but 4 is more than I can handle) but the stated number (1, 3, 10...) is the number that you have too many of. Hope that makes sense!
