Tom's inability to communicate well with others afftected every aspect of his life, especially his job and his personal relations/relationships with his friends and family.
Is well superflous in the above case?
Moreover, should I use relations or relationships, and why? Thanks.

No well is not superfluous. If it was left out then we would assume Tom could not communicate at all...but he does communicate when you add the word well; he is just not very good at it.
Relations/relationships means the same thing I just preferred relationships.
Got it! Thanks, Naamplao, for your clear explanation.
