Don't leave me on the left field.
What does the above statement indicate in addition to its facial value? Thanks.
It is usually said
He is out in left field.
I may be out in left field, but I think it is possible for man to fly.
It means out of touch with reality or ideas that are not practical.
I don't think you can be left there by someone else. You get there on your own.:-)
I think you can use it that way. It means "Don't fail to involve me in what's going on. Give me the information -- keep me in the loop."
Hi Anglicholic,
I will try as far as I am able to point your attention to an plausible interpretation of the term "on the left field". This interpretation (which is very close to this one of Naamplao) regard the term "left field" as a physical fact, which exist in the material world.
The primary association which sprang up into existence in my mind was bounded with the "left field" in the field of play in the game baseball, and especially with the "left fielder", who plays defense in this "left field". I have directed my attention to the idiosyncrasy (a behavioral attribute that is distinctive and peculiar to an individual) of the "left field", as well as to the characterization of the left fielder, to the requirements regarding his good fielding and catching skills, and to the tends to receive more balls than the right fielders because right-handed hitter tend to "pull" the ball into left field.
As matter of fact, this association proved to be true, but with something different reasoning.
The phrase "out of left field" has come to be used in popular vernacular to describe any idea which seems wildly unrelated to the subject being discussed. This arose at Chicago's Cubs from 1893-1915. After the Cubs moved to what is now Wriengly Field the property eventually became the home of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The University of Illinois built its Neuropsychiatric Institute building in what had been "left field", leading to the association with somebody or something that is a little off or crazy.
I hope you will take an all round view of my arguments.
V.
Thanks, my helpful friends.
Now I get it and I don't want to be in left field.
