    Post "serve time"

    Hi dear teachers,
I've just known that the meaning of this expression is:
    serve time
    to spend time in prison:
He's serving time for drugs offences.
But I wondred either this expression is common in spoken English or not?
if not, please could you give me another word which can have the same use?
