I'm not sure that I've ever heard 'wowed' used like this, A, though there's no reason that it couldn't be. Yes, these wouldn't likely be found in academic papers though they might well appear in newspapers or magazines.

I don't think wowed is a direct substitution for oohed and aahed in this context.I would express the sentence in the passive if I used "wowed"

All the visitors were wowed by the breathtaking scenery.

"Wowed" can be used in the simple past but it would probably be said this way.

The breathtaking scenery wowed all the visitors.

It is the scenery that is impressing the visitors...not the other way around.
