It's used to introduce a result or consequence of something. Here are some examples:

It's hard to give a simple explanation of 'will' and 'would', but 'will' is real, while 'would' is imaginary or unlikely.

It's a useful site for examples of real usage.

In this case is thus correctly used??

I understand their point of view, so I could not build up a way to convince them, and thus I explained to my friend yesterday.

I have not been able to get to the website recommended here. Is the URL correct? Is there another way to access it?

"thus" means 'in this way'. The phrase you need in your sentence is 'that's what' (or just replace 'and that's what' with 'as'). You could also use a semi-colon after 'convince them' and say '; I explained that/as much to my friend yesterday'.
