Default phrase - strike a light

What does the phrase "Strike a light" mean?
I only found that it is an old exclamation only really heard as a tong-in-cheek Cockney phrase nowadays.

It is a general exclamation of astonishment, like "Blow me down". There is a remote possibility it is rhyming slang for "sh[ite]", but like so many of these phrases, it is almost impossible to be precise.
