If you removed the "very much" this would sound fine but the "very much" when added (while not grammatically wrong) makes the sentence awkward to say.

If you wish to include the "very much" I would change the sentence to two sentences:

The elderly lady cherished her dog very much. It was as if it were her child.

Nothing is more important than to maximize what you were given.

The sentence is fine although some people might wonder about the meaning of "what" in the sentence. However, the context of the other sentences in a paragraph using this sentence may provide a clue. As a stand-alone sentence the "what" refers to your natural abilities (your looks, intelligence, etc)

Personally though, I would use "living" instead of "to live"

Yes...replace the red words with the blue ones.

In the last one I am suggesting that "to me" be removed. You use the pronoun "I" further on in the sentence so "to me" is not necessary. However, this still sounds awkward to me. So you will notice a complete blue sentence below this one in my original post.

I do like the fact that you used "exclaimed" in your sentence though. This reflects the emotion of Kate's words but it doesn't sound very good when I read the sentence. I replaced "exclaimed" with "really liked" and perhaps it would fit your sentence too.

Kate really liked my nice T-shirt.

The only reason that "here" is correct and "there" is wrong is because "here" appears in the first sentence.

If the first sentence was Tom said, “I play soccer there every day.”
then the correct second sentence would have been Tom said that he plays soccer there every day.

Yes, I would agree with you. However in using "that" you would have to be careful that the context of the rest of the sentences associated with these ones referred to something that happened a day or more previous.

The use of "this" implies the same day as the words were spoken.

The use of "there" or "here" has nothing to do with a verb tense.

I will repeat my answer in detail.

Case 1)

Tom said, “I play soccer here every day.”
Tom said that he plays soccer here every day.

Case 2)

Tom said, “I play soccer there every day.”
Tom said that he plays soccer there every day.

The difference between "here" and "there" is that "here" refers to a location close to him and "there" refers to a location farther away.
