I really would like to know the history of this word. how come it mean " fashionable, or mordern" ?
sorry , modern
I would like to know the history of the word "cutting-edge". how come it mean " fashionable or modern" .
"cutting-edge" means state-of-the-art, the very latest technology/research. While it is true it is fashionable to adopt new technology and that new technology is modern it isn't what cutting-edge means.
How does the word " to cut edge" have the meaning of "latest research/technology"?
anything relates to the edge?
Think of a knife...you have usually got a dull edge and a sharp or cutting edge. One would not associate anything new, exciting or state-of-the-art with a dull blade. A dull blade is useless unless you are buttering bread
Also a knife edge is sharp not rounded. Sometimes the state-of-the-art technology or fashion does not last and is replaced by something else. there is not much room at the leading edge of a technology (again a metaphor for a knife's edge).
It is sometimes referred to as "bleeding edge" because people have struggled, almost to the point of suffering to produce this product. Another cutting-type reference.
Perhaps the reference cutting refers to the difficult competition required to stay ahead of the competition...I am not sure.
