go picnicking?

I've never met with the phrase "go picnicking", but I've been wondering if it can be used, since we can say "go walking/ swimming/ camping, etc.".

Could you please explain it?

"go picnicking" means you pack a lunch, take a blanket, walk in the country, find a nice spot with nice scenery, spread your blanket and eat your lunch (usually with a companion).

It is a common phrase.

Hi, Joham!

A better expression would be 'to go on a picnic'. 'Grab your basket and we will go on a picnic.' To 'go picknicking', although correct, is not commonly used in the USA.

It probably won't appear in a dictionary, but it is a reasonably common expression in Canada

I live in southern Arizona, a region in our state with lots of sunshine, high temperatures, and very little natural shade. We do not 'go picknicking' on a regular basis and, I'm sure that is why I don't hear 'picknicking' used more frequently. Naamplao, on the other hand, lives in Alberta, Canada, which is a fabulously gorgeous province. I can understand why 'going picknicking' would be a more frequent activity for the people of that region.

Joham, feel free to use either expression ('going on a picnic' or 'going picknicking'; they are both correct.)

Have you been to Lake Louise? If so did you just see a beautiful small lake or did you hike along the trail to the teahouse/glacier? Nice trail but rocky, eh?

In the winter though snow on the trail packs down and makes it very smooth, like asphalt. Now, if you are sure there will be no snow storms that day you are there, it is a lovely walk in the winter time

I remember Needles, Arizona when I was young. I remember 9:00am and a temperature of 90F. I remember a young boy trying to run across an asphalt street in bare feet....not pretty!

You can always dress to get warmer. There is a limit to taking clothes off
