| From what has been said there is more than one prefix and suffix to the word formulate. Each one will have a different meaning. Please can you give the contex in which you wish to use the word. |

| And here we run up against the age-old question: when is a root not a root? The word "formula" was borrowed intact from Latin; but in Latin, the root is "form(a)" and "-ula" is a suffix, usually anglicised to "-ule". Thus "globule" is actually made up of the root "glob" (a drop or a soft mass) and the suffix "-ule". Sadly, the neat little compartments we label "root" and "suffix" and "prefix" aren't always as clear-cut as we would like. For the purposes of the original question, I'd submit that "formula", because it was borrowed in its entirety, can be seen as a root; after all, we don't normally think of a formula as a "little form" or in any connected with forms. |
