"as well as"

How to use "as well as" when it is used to link two verbs? I turn to some grammar books and find that there are various explanations, as follows:
1) it can only be followed by v-ing form.
eg.She sings as well as playing the piano.
2) it can be followed by "to do sth." but the "to" should be omitted.
eg.You cannot expect her to do the housework as well as look after the
children.
3) it can be used to link two verbs.
eg. He publishes as well as prints his own books.

I am puzzeled. I wonder if you could help me out.

#3 seems to me to be the only rule you need to worry about. The first one is clearly not correct and the second one is a good one to follow but not an absolute.

eg.She sings as well as playing the piano. That sentence is not a good one. Say, 'She sings as well as plays the piano.'
2) it can be followed by "to do sth." but the "to" should be omitted.
eg.You cannot expect her to do the housework as well as look after the
children. I agree that you don't need another "to" after "as well as".
3) it can be used to link two verbs.
eg. He publishes as well as prints his own books. correct

I am puzzeled. I wonder if you could help me out. "puzzled" is correct.
