Default Query regarding salutation/ending a letter

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am trying to organise my firm so that all Solicitors are using the same format for letter writing.

Unfortunately, we have some disagreement as to the CORRECT saluation and finishing of a letter and hoped perhaps that you could help!

If we know the client's name ie Mr Bloggs and the body of text of the letter is "I" eg "I refer to our meeting ....." then it finishes with "Yours sincerely"

BUT

Is it possible/correct to start a letter Dear Mr Bloggs (as we know the client's/person's name) and have the body of the text as "WE" ie "We received today ....." and finish the letter "Yours faithfully" so that the letter is addressed to a client/person we know by name but are not as yet on personal terms with?

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards,

Catriona

Default Re: Query regarding salutation/ending a letter

The rule is that if you address a letter to a person by name, whether or not you have ever met this person, you end with "Yours sincerely". The content of the letter is irrelevant.

However, if you are sending a letter to a company or similar body, with the salutation Dear sirs but with a line "For the attention of xxxx", the letter will be ended with "Yours faithfully".
