Essay? Hey there. I'm homeschooled and had to write an essay. Can someone please tell me if it's alright, what it may be missing or if I completely messed it up? :)Thanks:
The topic is why people do things they know are bad for them.
Do you ever wonder why people insist on doing things they know are bad for them? I do. Personally, I think it has to do with the three following things: Media, curiousity, and rebellion. Each of these three things contribute greatly to the doings of people.
Firstly I'll talk about the media. Everytime we walk outside we're indulging ourselves with viewpoints from major companies, whose job is to have us spend our money on cigarettes, alcohol, and even meat products! When we hear the same things since the day we're born, we'll think they're good, or cool. There's commercials that show the average persons idol smoking, or generally doing something that isn't good for their body and mind. It'll make us want to. Having the idea that things are cool are reason enough for us all to make mistakes.
Secondly, we hear it's "bad" to do things, but there's no backup to it! So it makes us curious. Sure, smoking may be a horrible thing, and turn our lungs black, but why would we listen to our superiors? We all have to try things out for ourselves. Not to sound too cliche' but it's a tad like the saying, "Curiousity killed the cat." Nothing will ever stop humans from being curious about these things that're bad for us.
Lastly, I think rebelion does it too. When people begin something and like it, it's usually because it's bad. What's the fun in doing something that's good for you? Then our parents, teachers and governments tell us that we can't keep doing that. So naturally, we think, "Yes we can!" and continue to indulge in lifes nasty pleasures. If only we knew how nasty they really were! If someone told me I need to stop eating popcorn, I'd look at them like they're lunatics, and probably grab a bag!
To conclude my overall general idea on why we do things that're bad, I think the mixture of our media, and minds. Perhaps if people would lay off on telling us things are bad, we'd just take it, do our own research, find out and stop! If people stopped pressuring their ideas and views onto us, we'd be our own people. |
