to/towards

Hi there,
I find it difficult to distinguish between 'to' and 'towards'. Can anyone give me examples to use these two prepositions?

And
Can I use 'to' as a direction or movement in the following sentence?
I jumped into a car and drove to Robertson Road and then turned into Peterson Road.

Yes, you can if you went as far as Robertson Road. 'Towards' has the idea of 'in the direction of', so you could use that if you were heading in the direction of Robertson Road but turned before you got there.
