Default the/a + maximum, total

I would like to know whether there is a rule for the usage of articles with the words such as maximum or total. I invented a rule that the indefinite article needs to be used in an "of phrase" (a maximum/total of 10 points) and that the definite article needs to be used in other cases (the maximum/total number of..) - is this rule ok or not? Thanks a lot!
