| | Re: Word order Thanks a lot, RonBee, but it has nothing to do with what I asked (only the 2nd sentence)
Anyway, could you please explain me how to use "need" correctly in the following examples and if there are any difference between them:
- I need to know about the story. / I need know about it.
- I don't need to know about it. / I needn't know about it.
- Do you need to know about it? / Need you know about it?
Thanks,
Balázs. |

| | Re: Word order Hi, RonBee!
Of course, I am interested in the details. I like being corrected
So, I am sure that the second sentences are also grammatically correct, but the one in the first row. Could you please explain me, why (not)?
Thanks a lot.
Bye,
Balázs. |

I need know about it.
I don't need to know about it.
I needn't know about it.
Do you need to know about it?
Need you know about it?

| | Re: Word order Just as a footnote:
1. I needn't know about it.
2. Need you know about it?
In BrE, these would both be possible.
"I need know about it" wouldn't be used, however. Why this is, I don't know!
Best wishes,
MrP

| | Re: Word order Need can behave as an ordinary verb, where it is followed by a noun phrase (I need a break) or an infinitive (I need to go/don't need to go). It can also behave as a modal verb (I needn't go and, less commonly, in the interrogative need I go?). Somewhere along the way, the affirmative form got lost, though you will come across it very occasionally. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
