Default got difficult, or became difficult?

Dear sir,I saw the sentence below on the CD ROM attached to ADVANCED GRAMMAR IN USE (by Martin Hewings):The test questions started off easy, but they got (not became) pretty difficult quickly.Could you tell me why "became" cannot be used in this sentence?

Default Re: got difficult, or became difficult?

Lazy writing.

"Became" could be used, but for many people "got" is a usefully comprehensive word and colloquially used frequently
