Spreading their homemade wings
Daedalus and Icarus carefully climbed onto a windowsill. Spreading their homemade/self-made wings, they leapt into the air.
Do both homemade and self-made work with the above wording?
Besides, I suspect it makes more sense to say "they leapt up to the air" instead of the part in bold, but what do you think? Thanks.

To be totally honest, I do not think you need either - providing you have already mentioned that Daedalus had created the wings from feathers and wax.
