Default open - is it correct to use?

"when the umbrella was open, it protected Hannah from the rain."

"when the stuck antenna was open, the satellite restored it's communication signal."

is "open" the best verb to be used in situations like these?

what about "to deploy"? when to use it?

thanks

It's an adjective, not a verb there. The first is fine, the second is a bit clumsy to me. 'When they managed to get the antenna open...'
