I don't know if I have to use have had or had had in this sentence and why
ex: I started to play hockey because I had had joy playing it.
or
ex: I started to play hockey because I had had joy playing it.
what is the right one ? please
The principle of the sequence of tenses normally requires the tense in the subordinate clause follows that in the principal one.
Since you’ve a past principal, “had had” instead of “have had” would be used. Wouldn’t it be better to say “I started to play hockey (again) because I (had) enjoyed (playing) it before.”
