Under US law, when someone steals something, it means that they took property from someone else with the intent of permanently depriving them of it. Robbery is theft (or "stealing") with violence; it is an active crime with the perpetrator either threatening violence or commiting violence while taking property from the victim.
Example:
If you return to your car in the parking lot after a day of shopping and find that someone has broken into your vehicle while you were gone and taken your stereo, you would say that your stereo was stolen.
If you return to your car in the parking lot after a day of shopping and a person suddenly sidles up to you with a gun and demands that you give him your wallet and all of your jewelry, then you are being robbed.
