How do you call it when you name the pupils in the classroom at the beginning of the lesson in order to write down who's missing that day? Is it "to call the register"? Is there any other way to call it which is most commonly used? How do you call the pupil who isn't there that day? It it that s/he is "missing"?
Hi, Rache!
In American schools the official register is called the 'roll'. (roll = an official register or list of names, especially of school pupils, members of a club, or people entitled to vote.) 'A teacher will take roll at the beginning of each class.' A student who is not present at the time attendance is taken is called 'absent'. 'As the roll was called/taken in the classroom, Rache was marked absent.'

Thanks so much for your help!!
