Re: Thank you For calling In the 19th and early part of the 20th century, it was common terminology to refer to a personal visit as a "call." In fact, most upper-class people carried "calling cards" with them (which were very similar to today's business cards, except they simply contained the person's name and address). If he stopped by someone's home and that person was unavailable, he'd leave his calling card with the butler in order to let the person know that he'd stopped by. |
