In two decades since its creation. Researchers have discovered that Lorenzo's Oil, although incredibly useful, isn't a miracle cure. It does little to help kids who already have symptoms of ALD, but it does seem to prevent many children who do have the ALD gene from developing symptoms.

To begin with, which of the above two versions sounds better?
Second, does "developing symptoms" refer to "catching the disease?" If not, what is it? Thanks.

You cannot change the "In [the] two decades" as it means during the two decades since the products discovery.

With ALD you do not catch a disease. Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a progressive degenerative myelin disorder, in which symptoms develop. Lorenzo's Oil can be used to prevent this happening.
