Back in the old days of say 30 years ago there were no such things as photocopiers or computers. So you typed several identical letters by placing several sheets of paper separated by carbon paper into your typewriter.
You sent the original to the person addressed in the letter and the others (carbon copies) to the rest of the people.
Nowadays this practice has ended of course but the term - carbon copy - remains for sending copies to other people. I would ALWAYS send copies of letters to the other recipients on letterhead. You would not give a good impression if you did not.
