Default late or dead

In the following sentence "On the wall is a portait of his late wife.", can we use "dead" instead of late?

"dead wife".
It appears to me that she was already dead when she was portrayed. She might be in the coffin when the artist sketched her.

My opinion might be wrong though.

If you said "On the wall is a portait of his dead wife" you would be forgiven for thinking that the portrait was painted after his wife had died.
"On the wall is a portait of his late wife" is the correct way to write this sentence.
