Default never seen in person before

Hello everyone
I'd like to ask about the meaning of the phrase "never seen in person before".

In the world created by the author of the book wood became rarity and very few people had something made of wood. When the reporter named Annabella visits a restaurant in the city where she has been sent to make a story she sees a wooden piano there.

Annabella was again surprised to see wood, this time on an old-fashioned piano, something she'd never seen in person before.

Does the phrase "she'd never seen in person before" imply that she perhaps had seen a wooden piano on tv or in books etc., but had never seen it, so to speak, in real life or does it mean that she had never seen it at all i.e. even in pictures?

Your first interpretation is correct. This is the meaning that "in person" gives to the sentence.
