Hello everyone
I'd like to ask about the meaning of the phrase "we roll". The situation is as follows: soldiers are in the bar celebrating the successful ending of the military operation. A sergeant said a toast and after that:
Cheers and ragged whoops came up from those present. One private yelled out, "We roll!"
Does "We roll" mean "We're having fun"?
No...
It would mean that party was over and they must move on to their next task, if that was really said. However, this is not something a private would say. It would be something a sergeant would say to bring the men back to order.
The private would have probably said "We rule!!!"
This means that "we are the best!"
Well I am not an expert in American slang but this is unusual for a junior member of the military to say if it's meaning was to call an end to the celebration and move on to their next objective (which I believe the meaning to be).
In the story, what happened immediately after this was said.
They are celebrating a successful action. I would see this as the men saying "we're the best - we roll over anything that's in our way".
The next sentence is:
Vega joined in the toast, but it actually caused him to sober up rather quickly.
After that the author writes that Vega thinks about his fellow soldiers that died in action. Then there are several dialogues between soldiers in the bar and finally the battle commander enters the bar to make a speech about how bravely Vega acted during the military operation.
