I read in a Food storage containers and measurements - Quiz the following sentence:

How many ears of corn should I get for dinner?

Could you explain to me the meaning of the term in bold? Could you please tell me what is the difference between ears of corn and maize cob?

I am well grounded with the next definition: corn kernels develop along a "cob" and form an "ear" of corn.The ear is surrounded by protective leaves called a husk. Depending on the cultivar the plant will produce one or more ears per stalk.

A cob of corn(maize) is not the same as an ear of corn, though some people think they are the same thing.

The cob is the hard center core of an ear of corn. The ear of corn includes the cob, the kernels, the corn silk and the leaves that wrap everything together.

Why it is called an "ear"? I am not sure but perhaps they look like ears on the corn stalk.
