Default to yell x to shout

hello,

the guy yelled at me.

the guy shouted at me.

does the sentences above mean the very same?

if not, why? when to use each one?

Basically they mean the same, but "yell" carries an implication of a sharper and more aggressive sound/intent.

The guy shouted at me to warn me that the car was coming.

The guy yelled at me when I stood on his toe.
