Smile by a strange turn of fate

By a strange turn of fate, John met his wife and married her years later.
By a strange turn of fate, John realized the true meaning of life and started helping people in need.

Do I use the phrase "by a strange turn of fate" right? Does it mean "Because of/Owing to a strange change of fate?" Thanks.

Thanks, Anglika.
