Re: smart question 'Time' is divided up into the past, the present, and the future. We show in speech and in writing just when some action happened in terms of time - whether in the past, the present, or will happen in the future. In grammar, the words we use to indicate what time we are talking about are said to show the 'tense' of the words. So - there is past, present and future time, and past, present and future tense.
